Psychological Approaches

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is a talking therapy that focuses upon learning about an individual’s thought processes (cognitions), behaviours and emotions. The attention tends to be upon the combination of aspects that are unhelpful and how these may be adapted to create enhanced wellbeing.  This is a therapist-led approach that provides structure, direction and specific strategies in the alleviation of distress. This approach is often recommended as the first line of psychological treatment by NICE (National Institute of Clinical Excellence).*

  • Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT)

CFT is considered to be a third wave approach.  This means that it uses the principles of CBT as the basis of its approach but also then layers a particular focus alongside this.  This allows the approach to be more humanistic.  CFT considers our compassionate voice towards ourselves and others.

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a comprehensive therapeutic approach that is centred around processing traumatic and difficult events through bi-lateral stimulation. It’s purpose is to reduce current levels of distress and it is recommended in the NICE treatment guidelines for use with PTSD. There is also a substantial evidence base for its use with those who may be struggling with anxiety, low mood, phobias, childhood abuse, addiction, pain and eating disorders.

  • Schema Therapy

Schema therapy is an approach that integrates aspects from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Gestalt and experiential therapies, with psychological theories (inc. attachment, object relations) that explain the development of relational attachments, personality and identity.

Schema therapy can be a useful approach to identifying and understanding patterns of coping and relating to oneself or others that are longstanding and have become problematic.

  • Person-centred Therapy

Person-centred therapy is one of the humanistic approaches.  It places more emphasis on the counselling-style approach, allowing the therapy to be self-led.

  • NICE guidelines

*The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) is a government organisation that methodically researches and publishes their treatment recommendations for various physical and mental health issues.

Why Psychologists?

As there are a number of mental health professionals available, it can sometimes be difficult to determine the qualifications, skills and experience of a particular type of practitioner when looking for a therapist.  The details below aim to clarify the role of the clinical and counselling psychologist.

  • All of our practitioners are qualified as Counselling or Clinical Psychologists.
  • This means that they have engaged in at least three years intensive post-graduate training, specifically focussing on mental health and wellbeing.
  • Psychologists will have training and experience in multiple clinical approaches, allowing them to tailor spoken therapy to the specific needs of the individual.
  • Consultant Psychologists are those that have achieved the highest level of experience.
  • All psychologists have to be registered with a regulatory body (HCPC) to govern their practice and ensure that they are held accountable for safe and responsible practice.
  • All psychologists have to engage in regular clinical supervision.  This is a process that allows them to reflect and discuss aspects of their work with other qualified psychologists.
  • All psychologists have to engage in annual CPD (continuing professional development) to ensure that they have the most up-to-date theory and clinical practice.
  • All psychologists have to evidence that they are trained in the psychological approaches that they are practising.
  • Most psychologists will have experience of working within the NHS as well as private practice.
